Constable: This is the lowest level you can join in the Indian police force. The qualification requirement requires that you should have cleared the Higher Secondary exam. Most of the state recruit at constable level once a year with around 5000 – 10,000 jobs posting. Various police department like traffic police, BSF, homeguard are recruited at this position.
Sub Inspector: This is the police officer you see heading the police station. Depending on the size of the area under jurisdiction, it is possible that there would be more than one SI at the station with a Senior SI heading the police stations.Qualification requirement for this require you to be a graduate. Exam are mostly held each year by Public service commission of each state. There are couple of hundred post each year but the exam in competitive with more than 100 person sitting for each open position
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) : Most of the time, there are 3-4 police station reporting into DSP. Direct opening at this level are few. Most of the time people joining as a SI is promoted to this level. The exam are held once in couple of year for direct recruitment which is taken by PSC. The qualification requirement for this is also that the candidate should be a graduate and as you can expect, the exam in competitive.
Superintendent of Police (SP) : This is the highest ranking police officer in the city. Sometimes when the city is big, they can have SP (City) and SP(rural). Some of the major metropolitan areas have Commissioner of Police(CP) who is much more senior than the SP level police officer. Union Public service commission(UPSC) take exam for Allied service each year which also contains Indian Police service(IPS) . There are a couple of hundred new post each year but the competition is fierce. People generally prepare for couple of year before clearing the exam.
Deputy Inspector General: DIG as it is commonly refers to have 3-4 district reporting to him. The SP of the district reports to him. They also work in various other state or central government department like CBI, CID state level etc.
Inspector General: IG have a region reporting to him. A region divides the state in around 3 – 4 parts.The also heads various department at the state and Central level. Most of the time, people starting through central service reach to this stage.
Director General of Police : He is the top cop in the state. He directly reports to the chief minister in the state. Almost all of the time, person joining as direct IPS would reach to this position.
Apart from all these post, Police officer end up in heading various other government department. Most of the time even after retirement they get a post heading one or another forum/department. So this is a good career choice you can make. There are good chance of promotion if you are able to crack a complicated case.
