What is corruption : Corruption as per Wikipedia is defined as any deviation from ideal. Anyone who is living in India would have listened about corruption or most probably have been a part of it or have seen it happening in from of himself. In India, corruption has almost reached to a stage where people take it for granted and a bribe is looked as a right by someone who is taking it and not something which he should be ashamed of.
Is police really most corrupt among all government branches :This could be a point of debate but by far the police is most visible government department with which common people have to interact a lot. Whether it is getting a license, clearance letter or making a passport. And then finally if you are driving a vehicle in India, you should have most probably been stopped by a traffic police cop. So irrespective of what you do, most people would have got a chance to interact with a police man and chances are that you would have paid him under the table to make sure that whatever the reason, that will make it go quick.
Looking from another angle, there are other government like irrigation, PWD which are even more corrupt but as common people don’t directly interact with them, they are not that detested.
What are the main reason for police corruption: There could be multiple reason which could be attributed to increase in corruption. One of the main reason that could be attributed to the rise in corruption in low salary which a normal constable make. He have certain power which he can use and the money he makes is little. This gives him a reason to take a bribe. Then we can also argue that the society don’t see corruption as a bad thing. You can see politician wining election even after being raided or found involved in a corruption scandal. It the attitude of Indian which is “Sabh chalta hai”.
Any easy solution : There are no easy solution for this problem but there are certain steps which could be taken to bring changes. The first and foremost would be the common people should stop giving bribes. They should not think of the quick way out but look at it in a more holistic way.
I have prepared for UPSC exam and have researched the best available information both offline/online on how to prepare for the Police Exam in India.
