Daily I receive a lot of emails asking for some specific question which people have for IPS exam. I do try to answer some of them but due to time constraint I can’t answer all of them. Lately I have been seeing similar question being asked using the contact page. Below you will find the questions which are asked a lot of times. I will write detailed answer to these FAQ’s so that people don’t have to write in to me for them.
What is the age limit for giving the UPSC (IPS) exam ?
The age limit condition for IPS exam is strictly followed and if you are overage by even 1 day you cannot give the exam . The age limit for general category candidate is between 21 – 30 years. For OBC, there is relaxation of 3 years and for SC/ST, the age is relaxed by 5 years.
But apart from the age limit, there is a constraint on how many time you can give the exam.
General Candidates can give the exam a maximum of 4 times.
OBS candidates can give the exam for a max of 7 times while SC/ST can sit in the exam unlimited times.
If I am graduated from law, B.com, agriculture or any other graduate course, can I apply for the exam ? What if I have done my graduation from IGNOU ?
The candidate should be a graduate from a recognized university. It doesn’t matter what specialization course you are doing. It could be physics, chemistry or agriculture. Just make sure that your university is recognized by UGC and you will be eligible to sit in the exam.
What if I am physically handicapped, can I still give the exam ?
No UPSC is clear about this and if you are even 10% physically handicapped you cannot get selected for the IPS exam but you may be still eligible for other services provided by UPSC.
How difficult is the exam ? How much preparation is need to clear the exam ?
UPSC exam is one of the most difficult exam in India. There are more than 200,000 candidates who appear for the exam and about 350 of them are selected. The amount of preparation needed to clear the exam will depend on the candidates preparation but just to give some idea, there are people who will live in delhi and prepare a couple of year even before attempting the exam. You have to remember a vast amount of data to clear the exam.
Can you provide some sample question from the IPS exam?

How much marks are needed to clear the prelims ? How much are needed to clear the main exam ?
This is again a question for which there is no clear answer. It depends on how the other candidates sitting in the exam have given there papers. There is no cut off as such and will depend on the percentile score which you receive compare to other candidates.
What is the IPS exam date for 2014. What is the course material.
The prelims exam for 2014 will be held on 24.08.2014 (SUNDAY) and the main exam will be held on 14.12.2014 (SUNDAY). The dates for the interview are announced once the merit list for the main exam are declared. For finding more information about IPS exam 2014, click here.
